Southampton dealt blow as target Rohl sets out ‘top choice’..
SAINTS managerial target Danny Rohl has admitted the Bundesliga or Premier League are his “top choice” for taking a new job this summer.
Highly-rated German coach Rohl, 36, is a former assistant at St Mary’s and is expected to be the club’s number one target to become the new boss.
After a 12th-place finish in the Championship, he looks set to depart Sheffield Wednesday amid a frosty relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri.
As well as Saints, Rohl already been linked with interest from European-chasing outfit RB Leipzig, as well as Championship rivals Leicester City.
Rohl has now spoken openly to RB Live in his native country about his next steps, and admitted he targets a job in one of Europe’s top divisions.
“I’m very grateful to Sheffield for the opportunity I’ve been given there and I’m someone who always wants to develop a club further,” he said.
“To do that, you have to weigh up how far that’s still possible or whether the maximum has perhaps already been reached under the current conditions.
“I always want to work with the best players and compete with the best coaches. The Bundesliga is, of course, a top choice,” added Rohl.
“After all, I grew up with the Bundesliga, but the Premier League is also a dream. I’m currently very excited to see what happens this summer.
“If both sides are convinced that you’re the right coach, then there’s nothing wrong with even taking the step to a Champions League club.
“I may have only been a head coach for just under two years but I’ve been involved in football for a total of 16 years.
“As an assistant coach in Leipzig, Munich, and at the German FA, I’ve had the privilege of coaching great players,” continued the German.
“I have won the Champions League, coached at a World Cup, and experienced a Premier League relegation battle with Southampton.
“That’s a package that gives me a lot of confidence that I’m ready for any challenge, as long as both sides are convinced of each other.”
Rohl travelled back to Germany immediately after Sheffield Wednesday finished their Championship season on Saturday, arriving at midnight.
The young father admitted he had only seen his two sons “maybe 10 times” in the 18 months he had been in charge at Hillsborough.
Family circumstances may help dictate Rohl’s preference when it comes to taking any new job but he will likely remain a top target for Saints.
