Breaking: A significant medical update for a critical defensive player for the Pittsburgh Steelers
To put it mildly, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had a challenging week.
First, the Steelers, who were vying for little more than some respectability for rookie head coach Jonathan Gannon’s first season in charge, lose their “franchise quarterback,” Kenny Pickett, halfway through what appeared to be an easy victory against the Arizona Cardinals (2-10 at the time).
Then, with a seasoned backup in Mitchell Trubisky—who, in my opinion, is a truly awful quarterback, even by backup standards—the team loses to Arizona 24–10 at home, embarrassing themselves. TJ Watt, the Steelers’ best player by far in this game, received extremely high praise from head coach Mike Tomlin despite the fact that Watt suffered a minor injury.
Following this, they suffer an even more humiliating defeat on Thursday night, losing to the then-2-10 New England Patriots, allowing Bailey Zappe to score 21 points against them in just the first half.
And for those who are thinking that this week has already been awful, horrible, and uninteresting, there is still one last slap in the face for the Pittsburgh supporters. Alex Highsmith, their star player opposite TJ Watt and the second half of one of the NFL’s best edge rushing tandems, sustained a nasty neck injury against the Patriots. Highsmith has quietly developed into a really excellent player.
The good news is that Highsmith has next week off to heal and isn’t completely out of the running. In fact, he will have nearly 2.5 weeks to get out of concussion protocol because the game is on a Thursday.
For the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have just suffered two losses to teams that are both eight (!) games below.500, this is still troubling news. Pittsburgh would hold the tiebreaker if they defeated the Baltimore Ravens in Week 18; they are currently two games behind the leaders in the AFC North and half a game out of the wild card mix.
The Steelers play three of their last four games against teams that are all hoping to make a run in the postseason, including the Colts, Bengals, and Ravens. In fact, the majority of their schedule consists of games that have playoff implications for both teams.
Regarding Alex Highsmith, let’s hope he recovers well and isn’t too negatively impacted by this injury—although injuries to that area of the body are never completely secure. Best wishes to Alex – Friday wrap up: The Steelers are not doing well.
