With Jamon Dumas-Johnson entering the portal, Georgia football loses a crucial player.

Jamon Dumas-Johnson leaves Georgia football due to the portal. The most unexpected and significant player to enter Georgia’s portal is this one. Over the previous two years, Dumas-Johnson started 24 games for the Dawgs. If not for his forearm injury against Missouri, Dumas-Johnson could have started nearly thirty games for the Dawgs.

This season, Dumas-Johson is the third inside linebacker to reach the portal. From that position group, he enters the portal along with EJ Lightsey and Xavian Sorey.

Dumas-Johson, Sorey, and Smael Mondon Jr. were in the 2021 class. Georgia still doesn’t know if Mondon will play one more season for the Dawgs or head to the pros.

There is a strong linebacking core, but Dumas-Johnson’s departure is a major blow to it. When Dumas-Johnson was sidelined due to an injury, CJ Allen filled in admirably.

Moreover, Raylen Wilson was named an SEC All-Freshman this season, and Troy Bowels is a gifted player for Georgia. In addition, Georgia is anticipated to sign two other backs and five-star linebacker Justin Williams.

Late on Thursday night, a lot of fans were taken aback by the news on social media. For two years, Dumas-Johnson was a starter, so many questioned why he would want to hit the portal.

Speculation among those with inside knowledge of the Georgia football program holds that CJ Allen replaced Dumas-Johnson when the rookie displayed his skill set while filling in for the injured Dumas-Johnson. The reason Dumas-Johnson felt compelled to leave Georgia makes the most sense in light of this.

Dumas-Johnson’s action also raises concerns about Mondon’s future plans, including whether to turn pro or stay another year. In addition to being roommates, Montagne and Dumas-Johnson are very close players. That might have had some bearing on Mondon’s choice.

Kirby Smart is cleaning the house and telling some players to go through the portal, but I could be completely wrong. I may be entirely mistaken, but certain actions seem to indicate that to me. The majority of the transfers were defense players, and Georgia’s defensive standards were not met by this year’s defense. I want to stress once more that this is all just conjecture on my part.

In any case, welcome to college football’s new era. Some of us will need some time to adjust to it. However, this is a new era, and the years ahead will see a great deal more of it. Jamon Dumas-Johnson’s contributions to the 2022 National Championship team will always be remembered, even though he will be missed.
