Seahawks Sign “Iron Man” starter for $40 million from former Jets

The new head coach Mike Macdonald of the Seattle Seahawks is rebuilding the team. Even though the Seahawks have less than $2 million in cap space, they are still active.

The news that Seattle was going to sign Laken Tomlinson was first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Tomlinson is agreeing to a one-year contract worth up to $4 million.

Two weeks ago, it was first reported that the Seahawks were interested in signing the former guard for the New York Jets. Some people were surprised by Fowler’s April 1 post, “The Seahawks have shown interest in Tomlinson.” Despite their limited resources, strengthening Seattle’s interior line is a primary goal. Tomlinson was also mentioned by Corbin K. Smith of SI as a “name to watch” in Seattle.

Brady Henderson of ESPN verified Pelissero’s report. Henderson wrote, “Seattle had a lot of youth there and openings at both guard spots.” Tomlinson, a former first-round pick, a former Pro Bowler, and an iron man who hasn’t missed a game in nine seasons, fills one.

Pro Football Focus reports that Tomlinson, 32, played in 1,099 snaps during the previous campaign. After allowing seven sacks in 2023, the former first-round selection from the 2015 NFL draft received an overall grade of 55.0.

The Seahawks have a lot of reliable talent to work with in starting quarterback Geno Smith and a potent trio of receivers in Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Ryan Grubb is the new offensive coordinator.

on was Tomlinson, who inked a three-year, $40 million contract ahead of the 2022 NFL season. By cutting the Pro Bowler, the Jets were able to free up about $8.1 million.

Regarding the offensive line, the same cannot be said. “Right guard Anthony Bradford (10 starts), center Nick Harris (4 starts), center Olu Oluwatimi (1 start), and left guard Tremayne  Anchrum Jr. (one career start) are Seattle’s projected starting interior offensive line members, according to Mike Dugar of The Athletic. That suggests that the offensive line will be inexperienced and that the players don’t have a lot of film to support their claims to be elite players at their positions.

“Even if Seattle uses its first-round pick on a guard, offensive line coach Scott Huff will have his work cut out for him in his first season coaching the position in the NFL.”

During the NFL’s annual league meeting last month, Macdonald made it apparent to reporters that the offensive line was still a work in progress.

According to SI, Macdonald stated, “It’s a work in progress.” “We’re not even close to being finished. We anticipate excellent play from those guys this year, and there will be fierce competition in that room.

“We’re working on it.” Not that we’re going to panic or anything; we don’t play until September. It takes a lot of time to identify the right players and opportunities in order to maximize the potential of the team.

Fowler revealed earlier this month that Seattle had talked about hosting Cody Whitehair as a free agent. After spending eight years as a starter for the Chicago Bears, Whitehair was also released as a cap casualty. But Smith wrote on Friday, “Had been informed”
