The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Vegas Golden Knights, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, 5-2, at Little Caesars Arena last night to extend their winning start to the year 2024. Dylan Larkin, who scored the 200th goal of his NHL career in the victory, said that the “buzz” in the sold-out crowd inspired him and his teammates.
The Little Caesars Arena was humming during the Golden Knights’ 5-2 victory. Little Caesars Arena was a hive of activity on Saturday night, reflecting the enthusiasm in Detroit for the Red Wings’ comeback as well as the Detroit Lions’ later-night participation in the NFC Championship game—their first since early 1992.
The Red Wings were able to capitalize on the spirited atmosphere created by the enthusiastic fans, who erupted in chants of “JA-RED GOFF” and “Let’s Go Lions” throughout the arena.
“It’s really big, and doing it at home feels really honored,” Larkin said. I suppose you could look back and be proud of having it. It was an amazing night to accomplish that against that team and win like we did tonight. The structure was astounding. All season long, the supporters have been fantastic, but tonight there was an added excitement that we sensed. We made some great saves and shut them out when we were ahead 3-2.
Larkin, who scored his 200th goal in his career in the first period, is extremely appreciative of Detroit’s depth of scoring and acknowledges its critical role in the team’s accomplishments. The Red Wings’ well-balanced offensive ability is evident as they currently have 10 players with at least 10 goals.
When asked if depth scoring makes a difference in Detroit’s success, Larkin said, “It does.” “I can’t stop talking about the Copp line and their actions. (Daniel) Sprong has made numerous contributions, and Joey Veleno scored tonight. It’s encouraging to observe. We’re receiving assistance from the back end. Our depth is the reason. Our record shows that we have a lot of players who can create plays and put the puck in the net.
Following Larkin’s empty-net goal late in the third period, an octopus made its way onto the ice; the Detroit captain hopes to see more of this in the spring.
“I would love to see a wave (of the octopus) whenever that occurs,” Larkin remarked. “We’ll save that for the playoffs, but the guys were yelling from the bench for (the ice crew member) to get it over her head and get the crowd going. That is our room’s objective.
In summary, there are exciting times in the Motor City.
