Virginia Tech athletes send a powerful message by logging onto the transfer portal.
Usually, a player’s playing days at the school are ended when they log into the college football transfer portal. For Virginia Tech, this month’s early transfer portal process is having the opposite effect.
Three players have indicated their desire to stay with the team through the Military Bowl on December 27 against University of Tulane, despite the fact that five players have officially entered the transfer portal. Although it’s a strange choice, head coach Brent Pry is excited about it and should be proud of it.
Transfer player from Virginia Tech sending a powerful message
Why would a player risk playing in one more game for the school they are leaving if they are accessing the transfer portal? It’s comparable to a player declaring they will skip a bowl game in order to prepare for the NFL Draft: why take a chance on an injury just to be selected four months later?
Defensive lineman Johnny Dickson, wide receiver Da’Wain Lofton, and cornerback Derrick Canteen have all accessed the transfer portal, but they have stated that they will stay with the Hokies until the end of the month because they have “unfinished business” with the team.
The athletes’ decision to stay with Virginia Tech for the bowl game is a clear indication that Pry and his staff
Year 2 got off to a rough start, going 1-3 in their four non-conference games. But, once ACC play started, they turned things around, winning five of their eight games to qualify for bowl games and earn a valuable extra month of practice together with one more game before all eyes turn to 2024.
A player’s career at that school usually comes to an end when they access the transfer portal, and they then look to start a new chapter somewhere else. Nonetheless, the transfer players’ decision to remain in Blacksburg for the Military Bowl is a powerful and encouraging statement about their resolve to complete their Hokie career. It’s also a positive thing because it reveals a lot about their opinions of the coaching staff.
