ORH weigh in on Luton Town’s summer transfer window
Luton Town welcomed 12 new players to Kenilworth Road during the summer transfer window, with Hatters fans catching glimpses of all but Sambi Lokonga and Teden Mengi.
To make place for so many new additions, Luton Town had to say farewell to a number of players, including Glen Rea, Luke Freeman, Henri Lansbury, and Sonny Bradley, as well as sanctioning loan departures for a further ten.
While we wait for the international break to end, we look at how certain Oak Road Hatter members saw the summer transfer window from a Town viewpoint, with Billy Mulley, Lewis Jones, Alex Oakhill, and George Litchfield providing responses…
Q: Which summer signing surprised you the most?
BM: It took me a bit to properly grasp the reality that we had signed Ross Barkley, and he was undoubtedly the most shocking signing. Another good surprise was the late arrival of Sambi Lokonga, and I am looking forward to seeing what the plan is for the Arsenal loanee as he continues to prepare for his stint at Luton Town.
LJ: There can only be one accurate response, and that is Ross Barkley. Even given his advancing age and recent stop/start career, I don’t think anyone thought this was a possible in a million years.
AO: The Ross Barkley signing was the one that surprised me the most. All of the others had rumors of interest before the announcement, but Barkley’s declaration surprised practically everyone!
GL: I believe a lot of people here will say Ross Barkley! I recall looking through a list of summer free agents a few days after the playoff final and playfully mentioning names like Barkley, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Diego Costa – but I never imagined we’d sign any of them.
Q: Which summer signing has the most potential?
BM: If you only look at the 12 names and how high the ceiling is, I believe Lokonga is the clear choice, but he is only a Luton player for the season. Outside of Lokonga, I’m drawn to the names Jacob Brown and Teden Mengi.
Brown has made an immediate impact from the bench in the Premier League, and he was the best player on the pitch against Gillingham in the FA Cup. Mengi, on the other hand, is a motivated, athletic, and technically-impressive player with the ability to prosper at Kenilworth Road this season and beyond.
