Max Wober explains why he had to leave Leeds United this summer
Wober has joined Borussia Monchengladbach on loan until the end of next season
Max Wober has revealed he opted to leave Leeds United this summer for the good of his international career. The defender saw his loan move to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach finalised on Monday afternoon, leaving Elland Road after just seven months.
Wober was something of a hit in West Yorkshire, stepping into the Leeds side after his switch from Red Bull Salzburg in January and instantly impressing. Unfortunately, he couldn’t help the Whites retain their Premier League status, but the club had high hopes of being able to keep hold of the Austrian this summer, despite seeing a host of key men leave the club.
The 25-year-old has 16 caps for Austria, who currently sit on top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group, and with the tournament to played next summer, Wober felt playing in the German top flight would give him a better chance of being selected by Ralf Rangnick.

“I’m telling you with a heavy heart that I’m leaving Leeds United for coming season on loan,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m forever grateful for the support you gave me from the minute I set foot on Elland Road. It really means a lot to me.
“I totally understand the disappointment with some of you. But for me it is a necessary step to show myself at the highest level and to be able to secure a spot in the national team of Austria for the Euros in 2024.
“I can only wish the club all the best during the time that I’m away. I’ll be supporting you no matter what, wherever I go.”
Wober still has four years left to run on his United deal and his long-term future will become clearer next summer when he returns to the club.
