Lakers’ JJ Redick jokes about what disappointed him in Luka Doncic’s revenge game..
JJ Redick got jokes…
Los Angeles Lakers superstar guard Luka Doncic did not let the emotional night on Wednesday prevent him from putting on a show in his former home. Over two months since his stunning trade from the Dallas Mavericks to LA, Doncic played at American Airlines Center for the first time as a visitor.
While he was in a different jersey this time around than what Mavericks fans were used to seeing him don during his stint in Dallas, he reminded everyone that he was still the same terrifying weapon on the court with a brilliant offensive night to lead the Lakers to a 112-97 victory.
The 26-year-old Doncic already surpassed his season scoring average with just two quarters, as he torched the Mavs for 31 points in the first half, knocking down 11 of his 16 attempts from the field.
He found his touch early from behind the arc, where he went 6-for-8 before halftime. When it was all said and done on the court, five-time NBA All-Star had racked up a total of 45 points on 16-for-28 shooting with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals in 38 minutes.
Following Los Angeles’ win, Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who also once played for the Mavericks, joked about being disappointed by Doncic falling short of scoring 50 points (h/t Joey Mistretta of ClutchPoints).
The game was a tight one until the middle of the fourth quarter when the Lakers broke away. The score was tied at 87-87 with a little under eight minutes left in regulation when four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James put Los Angeles in front for good with a three-point play. James was instrumental too in LA’s win, as he finished with 27 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter.
The Lakers don’t have a shot at either of the top two spots in the Western Conference standings but they are still in control of their chances to lock up the No. 3 seed. They are 49-31 with two games left to play. Los Angeles will play the Houston Rockets for the Lakers’ home finale in the regular season on Friday before facing the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday on the road.
