Willfried Gnonto is keen to leave Leeds United this summer following their heartbreak in the Championship play-off final, wanting to return to Serie A.
Daniel Farke’s side came bitterly close to booking their spot in the Premier League but fell to Southampton at the final hurdle on May 26th, a defeat that leaves them languishing in the English second division for another season.
Gnonto had a fairly decent season with Leeds in the Championship, scoring eight goals and providing two assists across 36 matches as they finished third in the regular season. Despite having made 13 caps for the Italy national team, he wasn’t included in the preliminary squad ahead of the European Championship.
Francesco Guerrieri of Calciomercato.com details how Gnonto is keen to leave Leeds this summer, wanting to head back to Italy and breakthrough in Serie A. He wants to prove himself in the Italian topflight in order to earn a spot in Spalletti’s Azzurri squad.
Last summer, the English side asked for a fee of around €20m for the winger and refused to entertain the possibility of a loan deal, pushing clubs like Fiorentina, Sassuolo and Roma away, but things could be different in the upcoming transfer window.
