Indiana Hoosiers National Team With a left knee injury, Mackenzie Holmes left Sunday’s eventual 71-54 victory over the Maryland Terps and did not return to the game.
In the third quarter, Holmes seemed to hurt her knee as she was going up for a layup when a Maryland defender slid in front of her. After realizing her injury, Holmes hopped on one foot.
When the game was almost over, the 6-foot-3 center got up on her own and went back to the locker room for assessment before coming back to the Hoosiers bench to finish the game.
Due to injuries to the same knee, the fifth-year senior, who leads Indiana in scoring (20.7 PPG) and rebounding (7.1 RPG), has missed time or been limited in the past throughout her career, including in the postseason in 2023.
Indiana’s situation was exacerbated when sophomore Lilly Meister left the game later due to an ankle injury.
Following the game, Teri Moren, the coach of Indiana, stated that both players would be assessed with the goal of having them available for the Big Ten tournament, which the third-seeded Hoosiers begin play in on Friday.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Moren remarked, “You try like crazy to not let your mind go anywhere that it shouldn’t.” “As the coach, it is your responsibility to ensure that the children on the floor are the center of your attention at that precise moment. That’s what I attempted to do, then. Once more, I’m not sure what to take away from it emotionally at this time. Until they tell me otherwise, I will remain upbeat.”
Regarding Holmes, Moren continued, “She has undoubtedly had some bad luck, particularly in late February. We’re going to have faith and hope that everything will work out as we had hoped. As we all know, Mack is an extremely tough and resilient young man.
