Sources: Burnley agree to sign Andros Townsend after Everton exit

Burnley are set to sign former Everton star Andros Townsend on a free transfer after he impressed on trial, sources have told Football Insider.

Townsend, 32, is a free agent after leaving Everton at the start of July upon the expiration of his contract at Goodison Park.

The winger missed the entirety of last season because of a knee injury but is now back to full fitness and has been training with Burnley in pre-season.

The former Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle star has done enough during his training stint at Burnley to be offered a deal by Clarets boss Vincent Kompany.

He is set to become the Lancashire club’s tenth summer signing following their return to the Premier League.

Zeki Amdouni, James Trafford, Jordan Beyer, Dara O’Shea, Michael Obafemi Luca Koleosho, Nathan Redmond and Lawrence Vigouroux have joined the club permanently – while Jacob Bruun Larsen has joined on loan.

Townsend‘s contract at Everton expired last month after two years on Merseyside.

He played 27 times in the 2021-22 campaign – his first at the club – and notched seven goals and four assists.

However, the Walthamstow-born winger suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the final stages of the season and has been sidelined ever since.

But the 13-cap England international is now fit again and is set to continue his career in the English top flight.

Townsend has managed 25 goals and 35 assists in 264 appearances in the Premier League.

Burnley start their 2023-24 campaign against treble-winners Man City on 11 August.

Burnley are continuing to strengthen the ranks ahead of the new season and have now had a bid accepted for young French forward, Wilson Odobert.

The teenager had a good season with Troyes last season but is set to be among a number of players set to leave the Ligue 2 club.

And according to a report from Foot Mercato this afternoon, Burnley have made a £10m move to sign Odobert.

The 18-year-old scored seven times last season and is capable of playing across all three front positions if needed.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has made a habit of bringing in players who are relatively unknown on these shores and turning them into stars.

The likes of Manuel Benson shone last season for the Clarets as they won promotion and Kompany clearly sees potential in Odobert.

The Clarets are looking to cement themselves back in the Premier League this season and have made a number of moves in the transfer market already.

And while Odobert might well be one for the future, Kompany clearly sees the potential in the youngster.

A young talent to watch for Burnley fans

Burnley fans will have full trust in Vincent Kompany’s judgement on players and the signing of someone like Odobert will be exciting for those inside Turf Moor.

Odobert is very much an unknown quantity in England but there’s an obvious talent there. Troyes are losing a number of players this season after relegation, with Yasser Larouci another who has sealed a move to England.

For Burnley, they’ll hope Odobert is a small gamble that pays off in the long term.

Burnley have reached an agreement to sign Troyes attacker Wilson Odobert, according to reports from France.Website Foot Mercato writes that the Ligue 2 side have just accepted the Clarets’ offer for the player.

It’s claimed that Burnley offered €11m for the transfer, and that was enough for Troyes to let him go.

The French club had signed the player from Paris Saint Germain on a free move a year ago. So even though they’re making a big profit with his sale, they still had him tied in a contract until 2027.

Odobert is just 18, but already has some decent experience in professional football. Troyes had been playing in the first division last season, and he had 32 appearances, with four goals and two assists. That was his first season in action among the big boys, as PSG didn’t give him the chance of a debut.

The youngster has been playing as an attacking midfielder and on both wings, so that’s certainly a versatile option that Vincent Kompany will be glad to have in the squad next season.

Troyes’ relegation to Ligue 2 definitely helped Burnley get a cheaper deal.

Premier League club Burnley saw another transfer bid rejected for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke this week.

Burnley have completed the signing of another wide player after seeing multiple bids rejected for Sunderland’s Jack Clarke.

Danish wideman Jacob Bruun Larsen has joined The Clarets on a season-long loan deal from German club Hoffenheim, where he has spent the last four years – which included a loan spell at Anderlecht.

Since their promotion to the Premier League Burnley have signed former Southampton winger Nathan Redmond on a free transfer, while spending a seven-figure fee to Espanyol for 18-year-old wideman Luca Koleosho.

The Clarets have also made attempts to re-sign Nathan Tella from Southampton, following his impressive loan spell at Turf Moor last season.

Burnley’s pursuit of Clarke has been well documented this summer, with it emerging this week the Premier League club have seen a fourth bid, in excess of £10 million, rejected for the 22-year-old.

The latest offer is still well below Sunderland’s valuation for a player who scored nine Championship goals and provided 13 assists last season.

Clarke also has three years left on his Sunderland contract after joining the club on a permanent transfer from Tottenham last summer, while it’s believed Spurs negotiated a significant sell-on clause in the deal.

When asked about Clarke’s situation and Burnley’s latest offer earlier this week, Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray said: “If I’m sitting here being honest, I don’t think it’s been anywhere near a level.

“Every player has their price and so it would be silly for me to sit here and say any player is not for sale, because everyone is at the right price.

“But I’d have to say that it feels to me as if Burnley have been moving away and are looking at other options, choices. As far as I can see they were testing the water and as far as I’m concerned, the right decision has been made.

You can see right through pre-season that Jack Clarke is ultra confident at the moment, right at the top of his game. Hopefully he has more goals and assists in his boots for Sunderland this season.”

Sunderland are preparing to face La Liga side Real Mallorca this weekend in their penultimate friendly match of pre-season.

The Black Cats will then face National League side Hartlepool on Tuesday, providing opportunities for players who are short of game time.
