What Coventry City are missing as Frank Lampard backed to ‘mould’ promotion team..

Coventry City news from CoventryLive as EFL pundit backs Frank Lampard to get summer support to build for next season..

Frank Lampard is being backed to get the support of Doug King to ‘mould’ Coventry City into top end Championship challengers next season.

That’s the view of EFL pundit Don Goodman, who believes the Sky Blues are an ‘in-form’ striker away from a successful promotion push.

Reflecting on this week’s play-off semi-final disappointment at the Stadium of Light, where City suffered a 3-2 aggregate defeat in the cruellest of last-minute circumstances to miss out on a trip to Wembley, Goodman said: “My heart goes out to Coventry City because they were the better team. But that’s not what counts.

“Sunderland are a team with a place in my heart, so I’m buzzing for them. I think they were stuck between a rock and a hard place because I don’t think for the life of me Sunderland would have gone about their business in such a way if the tie was level or if they were behind when the second-leg kicked off.

“You could feel it in the crowd that Coventry were dominating. There were groans when Sunderland lost the ball easily on a regular basis and Coventry would come again with another attack.

“I don’t think it’s the way Regis Le Bris wanted to play, but he suggested afterwards that they were nervous, which might explain it. They found a way to win and you have to give them credit for that. It’s about winning on these occasions, that’s all that matters, even if the best team doesn’t always win.

Turning to the club’s off-field business and preparing for next season, the former Wolves and Sunderland striker said on FruityKing’s blog: “What happened against Sunderland will provide Frank Lampard, (club owner) Doug King and the whole of Coventry City with incredible motivation for next season.

“The plans will have already been in place before the play-offs and I think Frank Lampard will be backed in pre-season. He’ll be given a chance to mould the team into how he wants it to look, which is what we probably saw over the two legs in terms of controlling games. City were probably an in-form striker away from getting to Wembley.

“They’ve got the foundations of a really good Championship team who, I have no doubts, will be challenging at the top end of the Championship table next season.”
