GM of the Broncos Will Do “Whatever it Takes” in the Draft to Get a QB Who Can Change the Landscape
The Denver Broncos are still reasonably close to the best quarterbacks in the class even though they may not be selected in the top 10 of the NFL draft. The Broncos haven’t selected in the first round since acquiring Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II in 2021 because of the resources given up in the trades of Sean Payton and Russell Wilson that occurred back-to-back seasons.
You would have to believe that it would take a very, very special player at a very, very important position to persuade the Broncos to part with more first-round capital after being reduced to first-round spectators in each of the previous two seasons. The legendary starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, or at least a prospect that Payton and general manager George Paton were optimistic could develop into one.
Payton and Paton would have to be prepared to give up their first-round picks in 2024, 2025, and possibly even 2026 if the Broncos wanted to trade up to, say, No. 4 overall with the Arizona Cardinals. That would definitely be considered “mortgaging the future,” and there is always a risk involved when one mortgages anything.
However, Paton says the decision-makers in Dove Valley will go “anywhere it takes to get him” if the Broncos find a player who has the potential to be that player who turns the franchise’s fortunes around.
During Denver’s pre-draft press conference on Thursday, Paton stated, “I would just say if there’s a player that you think can change the landscape of your organization moving forward, like quarterback, then you do whatever it takes to get him.” “You act aggressively and try to win him over if there’s agreement or love in the building. You try, but it doesn’t mean you’ll succeed in getting him. Thus, we’re receptive to anything. We are completely accessible.
