City’s winger has outlined how a shift in thinking has transformed his fortunes as he shared his memories of a personally successful year.

“I didn’t expect that. I expect to score goals, assist and play well, and last year I scored goals too, but not as many as this season. I don’t say, ‘Come on, you need to score more’. That’s not my attitude. I just think that when I play and I enjoy it, goals and assists will come. The most important thing is to help the team.

“It was scoring two hat-tricks,” the winger said. “The goals are important, but also I played very well. The first hat-trick was away from home: we played well at Derby, and my hat-trick to win the game was very important. That was the best moment, because I’d never scored three goals in one match before.

“Then the second one was at home in front of our supporters, and I was really happy. I worked hard in pre-season for a year like this – it’s a privilege to be in this situation. This has been my best year in football.”

The Spanish winger leads the Championship golden boot race heading into the final three games of the season despite only netting twice since November.

It has been a campaign that has seen Sainz rewarded with awards and plenty of praise alongside the inevitable speculation surrounding his future heading into a summer window that is expected to be busy for City.

“I want to play for Spain,” Sainz told FourFourTwo. “I played before. It will be difficult, but I want to do it, and I want to play in the Premier League.

“I need to keep working hard – that’s the most important thing. When each day passes, tomorrow you wake up and say, ‘okay, I am better than yesterday’ – better person, better player. Every day, I need to go step by step.”

Sainz has broken plenty of personal records with his 17 Championship goals, eclipsing his previous goal-scoring best of nine for Turkish side Giresunspor in the 2022/23 campaign.
