Stoke City favourite named player of the season ahead of final home game
Congratulations to Viktor Johansson, who has a message for Stoke City supporters after being crowned player of the year
Viktor Johansson has been named Stoke City player of the season.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper, who signed from Rotherham United last May, is understood to be the runaway winner of the supporters’ vote for the club’s official award.
He has kept 14 clean sheets so far, with two matches remaining to secure the Potters’ place in the Championship, including this evening’s final home match of term against Sheffield United (8pm).
Johansson has also risen to become Sweden number one over the last few months, playing in seven of their eight international fixtures in 2024/25.
But in his message to fans after receiving the award, he said his thank yous before focusing on the work still to do.
“I just wanted to thank all of you supporters for voting me the player of the season,” he said. “I want to thank all the coaching staff, all the players and especially the goalkeeping group for working so closely with me and making me a better goalkeeper.

Stoke City team news vs Sheffield United as Mark Robins makes two changes
Team news from the bet365 Stadium as Stoke City take on Sheffield United
Mark Robins has made two changes to his starting XI as Stoke City take on Sheffield United (8pm) looking for points to secure their place in the Championship.
Stoke are back at headquarters looking for a response to a severe loss at Leeds United on Monday, knowing that a win will guarantee survival. A draw could be enough, or even a defeat, depending on rivals’ results tomorrow.
Sam Gallagher and Lynden Gooch come into the team in place of Ali Al-Hamadi and Josh Wilson-Esbrand. Gooch will start at left-back while Gallagher will lead the forward line, flanked by Million Manhoef and Bae Junho. You can follow all the action here.
Robins, asked about players’ reaction to the Leeds game, said at his pre-match press conference: “We’ll have to see (on Friday) night but initially they’re ok. You just move on, we have to move on in Championship football and certainly for us we’ve got another chance to play against Sheffield United on Friday evening. We can then finally put it right behind us and focus on the job at hand because we’ve still got two games to play and we’ve got to hit better performance levels than we did on Monday, that’s for sure.
