A club left their star player out of a match at the last minute overnight after a formal West Ham approach ahead of the transfer deadline.
West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for England centre-back Harry Maguire throughout the summer transfer window.
When Maguire snubbed the Hammers, attentions turned to bringing in Dinos Mavropanos from Stuttgart in a £17m deal.
But since them rumours reignited and were quickly extinguished that West Ham were trying again for Maguire.
And there continues to be talk West Ham boss David Moyes wants another centre-back with the likes of Thilo Kehrer and Nayef Aguerd being linked with moves away.
It seems West Ham are now looking at the other end of the spectrum to Maguire.
Because they want to sign an England youth international 10 years his junior in the shape of Peterborough United centre-back Ronnie Edwards.
And the club left star player Edwards out of their match overnight at the last minute after a formal West Ham approach ahead of the deadline.
Are West Ham about to take advantage of strong relationship with Posh DoF?
Sky Sports reporter James Savundra revealed last night that the Hammers have made an initial approach for the Posh defender.
And that reportedly saw Edwards pulled out of Peterborough’s Carabao Cup victory over Portsmouth late in the day.
“West Ham have made an initial approach for Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards The 20-year-old has been tracked by a host of Premier League clubs,” Savundra said.
And today The Evening Standard have confirmed talks are taking place between West Ham and Peterborough over a fee for the defender.
“Negotiations between the clubs over a fee are ongoing, with David Moyes looking to sign a player who will both provide centre-back cover and stands out as a prospect for the future,” the report states.
“Edwards was part of the England Under-19 side that won the European Championship last summer and represented the U20s at this year’s World Cup.”
It is worth noting that West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has a close relationship with Peterborough director of football Barry Fry – who is often spotted in the director’s box at Hammers matches.
