LUTON TOWN ANNOUNCE SIGNING OF TAHITH CHONG FROM BIRMINGHAM CITY

Luton Town have announced the signing of Tahith Chong from Birmingham City.

The 23-year-old former Manchester United academy graduate has signed a c ontract of undisclosed length with the Premier League new boys, and moves for an undisclosed fee.

Luton’s fee for the former Dutch youth international winger has been reported by some outlets as a club-record fee, though Luton have not confirmed this status.

The move makes Chong Luton’s third season ahead of the new season, following the previous arrivals of Chiedozie Ogbene and Mads Andersen.

Chong had joined Birmingham from Manchester United in 2021 on loan, before making his stay at the West Midlands club permanent in 2022.

He made 61 appearances in all competitions over his two season playing for Birmingham, scoring five.

The winger had joined Manchester United for Feyenoord as a youngster, and made 16 appearances for the Red Devils’ first team, while before joining Birmingham on loan he also made short-term moves to Werder Bremen and Club Brugge.

Luton manager Rob Edwards told the club’s official website that he had admired Chong for a long time, and that he represented a high-quality option as the club sought to strengthen their options.

He said, “Tahith is someone that I, and the football club, have known for a very long time. I first crossed paths with him when I was at Wolves a few years ago and he was in Man United Under-23s.

“I’ve liked him from then, and he was a bit more of a winger at the time. Looking at him in a lot more detail at Birmingham this year, he’s been able to play inside as a midfield player as well.

“Not only is he good technically, but athletically he’s shown another side to his game this year in the Championship, that his out of possession work was diligent, hard-working and reliable.

“He gives us some real quality as well and with the ball, an end product. He’s at a good age and he’s going to keep improving. I think he’s coming into a good environment that’s going to help him do that, give him a platform that will help him take risks and be brave.”
