Leeds could recall Darko Gyabi in shock twist – expert

Leeds could recall Darko Gyabi in shock twist

Leeds United could recall Dark Gyabi from his loan spell with Plymouth Argyle as a result of their midfield injury crisis.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Leeds and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains very well-connected at the club, insisted that Gyabi remains an option to replace the injured Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev.

The 20-year-old moved to Argyle on loan in the summer and has established himself as a key part of Wayne Rooney’s first-choice starting XI.

He has made 11 appearances across all competitions so far this season, starting all but one of their nine Championship fixtures since making the move from Elland Road.

However, Daniel Farke’s side have been hit heavily by injuries in the midfield department, as Robinson previously told Football Insider that both Ampadu and Gruev will be sidelined until January 2025 “at least”.

This has forced the club to consider their options in midfield, with Gyabi’s form on loan leading to the view that he could feature in the first-team at Leeds.

Robinson, though, questioned whether the club would be able to recall the midfielder on short notice given the agreed length of his loan spell.

With Amapdu and Gruev both ruled out, Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka will be forced to step into the first XI, leaving Farke short of options from the bench.

As a result, Robinson has insisted the Leeds hierarchy could explore the possibility of breaking Gyabi’s loan deal short to help provide further cover.

They’ve got Charlie Crew who they can promote if need be,” he told Football Insider.

“He could do a job filling in in that area for now.

“They’ve got Darko Gyabi as well, who’s on loan at Plymouth.

“He’s gone there on a season-long loan and he’s doing really well under Wayne Rooney.

“If there is a clause to recall him from that loan deal then that may be something they look to do to help with their midfield numbers.

“Whether that would be possible to make happen immediately is up in the air, but it is an avenue the Leeds hierarchy could consider.”

In other news, Leeds United are plotting a new goalkeeper signing. That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League duo will likely issue more shares to ensure they don’t face any financial issues.
