Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff were caught up in an amusing but awkward encounter in the Monaco Grand Prix paddock. The Mercedes team principal zipped by on a scooter as his star driver signed a bunch of Ferrari caps for adoring fans.

Hamilton and Mercedes have forged one of F1’s most iconic partnerships since the Brit swapped Woking for Brackley back in 2012, but their final season before the 39-year-old’s fairytale late-career move to Ferrari has got off to a rocky start.

The seven-time world champion has a best finish of sixth place after eight races and while he has finished in the top 10 of every race in which he has seen the chequered flag, Hamilton is 12 points behind team-mate George Russell and trails his colleague 7-1 in the qualifying battle.

For now, the relationship between Wolff and Hamilton appears to be intact, but the latter would be forgiven for wishing the remainder of the 2024 campaign away given the performance demonstrated by his future employers. Ferrari won the Monaco GP with Charles Leclerc, while Mercedes remains the fourth-fastest team in the field.

In some ways, Hamilton is already building bridges with his future team. The legendary Brit was filmed signing caps from Ferrari fans in the Monte Carlo paddock as his boss rolled by on a scooter.

While Hamilton’s relationship with Wolff remains stable, the Brit made some eye-catching comments after qualifying last weekend, hinting that there was favouritism at play in the Mercedes camp.
