The winning coach gets a cold brew bath at The Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.
This evening, as the Michigan Wolverines attempt to upset the underdog Washington Huskies, the college football season comes to an exciting close. At least we’re keeping it in the family and can unite around a common enemy, even though my beloved Texas Longhorns came up short against UW, the alma mater of Sprudge co-founder Jordan Michelman.
The bowl season this year has been a little strange, but dare I say, enjoyable? The title sponsor has always had a three-hour commercial during bowl games, and this year was no exception, though they did get a little silly with it. Rather than the customary post-game dousing of the victorious coach in Gatorade, this year’s bowls saw the celebration as a final chance for a little product placement, to delightful results. The head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers took a mayo bath after the Duke Mayo Bowl. On national television, the winning team devoured the gigantic Pop Tart mascot, which served as the team’s mascot for the Pop Tarts Bowl. And Ched-Z, the mascot for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl made it clear he was not edible.
This was Scooter’s first year as the Frisco Bowl’s title sponsor in Frisco, Texas, and they didn’t waste any time joining in on the fun, according to the Sports Business Journal. UTSA players received a massive Scooter’s Coffee to-go cup, about the size of a five-gallon Gatorade cooler, after rallying to defeat Marshall 35 to 17. The players showered coach Traylor in celebration as the fourth quarter came to an end and they had the victory secured. It is reasonable to assume that the coffee had been brought to a suitable dousing temperature since Traylor wasn’t rolling around on the ground screaming, “OH GOD THE PAIN WHY DID MY OWN PLAYERS DO THIS TO ME?”
To be honest, it’s all a little silly, but I believe that this type of behavior is necessary, particularly in these extra bowl games. Maybe a guacamole bath following the Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl, or perhaps a mashed potato dunk tank in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Really, there’s nothing more entertaining than seeing two teams with six wins alternately attempt to lose the game.
