Spring training has taken a refreshing turn for their top talented left-handed pitcher, who made an impressive Cactus League debut with the Chicago Cubs on Monday. He pitched two scoreless innings against the San Diego Padres, allowing two hits, two walks, and striking out two batters—a promising start after a long road back from Tommy John surgery.

“This time last year, I was prepping for Little League season and rehabbing at home,” Boyd reflected. “Now, I’m here, pitching in games, working through situations. I’m beyond grateful and excited for a healthy year ahead.”

Matt Boyd’s journey back to the majors wasn’t easy. The last few years were riddled with injuries, sidelining him from the big leagues. “I wouldn’t wish those years on anyone,” Boyd admitted. “But those challenges shaped me. Now, I get to wear a Cubs uniform and play at historic Wrigley Field—it’s an opportunity I don’t take lightly.”

The Cubs signed Boyd to a two-year, $29 million contract this offseason, betting on his return to form. Manager Craig Counsell, while optimistic, emphasized the need to manage Boyd’s workload carefully. “We want him to pitch a full season—that’s why we brought him here. But we’ll be cautious and watch for cues.”

During Monday’s outing, Boyd worked closely with catcher Miguel Amaya. The duo communicated between innings and even mid-at-bat using PitchCom to fine-tune pitch sequencing. Boyd praised the 25-year-old Amaya’s maturity, calling him “wise beyond his years.”

“My slider wasn’t breaking the way I wanted,” Boyd said. “Miguel pointed out the shape change despite the great location. That kind of feedback is invaluable.”

Reflecting on his time away from baseball, Boyd shared a silver lining: “A year ago, I wasn’t on a team; I didn’t have a shot at a big-league role. But being home let me coach my kids—that’s something most players don’t experience. Still, I’m hoping I won’t get that chance again for another six-plus years,” he added with a smile.

With Boyd’s health trending upward and his mindset focused on making the most of his second chance, Cubs fans have reason to be optimistic. If he continues on this path, Boyd could become a key figure in the Cubs’ rotation for the 2025 season and beyond.
