Mookie Betts overcame illness early in the season. Why his swing took time to catch up..

Mookie Betts is on an RBI streak..

Mookie Betts reached base three times on Saturday night and into Sunday morning in the rain-delayed middle game of this weekend series against the Braves. He was not alone, as the first five hitters in the Dodgers lineup reached base 14 times in 25 plate appearances, and accounted for all the team’s hits (12) and runs scored (10).

Betts extended his hit streak to six games, and his double in the fourth inning against Spencer Schwellenbach drove in a run and extended his streak to six straight games with at least one RBI. That includes a solo home run Friday that provided the winning margin in the series opener.

That six-game RBI streak matches Betts’ longest streak since joining the Dodgers, also doing so from September 2-9, 2020. His career best is seven straight games with an RBI, which he did twice in 2016 while with the Red Sox.

Shohei Ohtani holds the Dodgers record with 10 straight games with at least one run batted in, setting the mark last June 16-26. Five others reached nine straight games, including Matt Kemp in 2011.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but the major league record for consecutive games driving in a run is a whopping 17 games, by Cubs first baseman Ray Grimes from June 27-July 23, 1922.

Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Sends Important Message Amid Shohei Ohtani Offensive Struggles…

The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to a healthy 16-9 start over their first 25 games; however, some hitters are off to relatively slow starts, and there may be reason for concern. One of the players is the Dodgers’ MVP Shohei Ohtani, who engraved his name in MLB history last season by originating the 50/50 club with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. So it’s no surprise there is a little bit of overreaction as the Dodgers’ $700 million man isn’t lighting it up out of the gate. Ohtani is also rehabbing two injuries, dealing with the birth of his first child, and working on returning to.

the mound. Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts spoke out in Ohtani’s defense, giving a strong two-word message amid Ohtani’s struggles at the plate: “He’s human,” said Betts to the LA Times’ Jack Harris. Dating back to April 15th against the Colorado Rockies, Ohtani is 3-for-21 with just one home run and two RBIs. He has struck out nine times in that space, which is uncharacteristic for the Japanese star. There’s no doubt it’s just a matter of time before he gets going again, but Los Angeles is on a slight slide after being swept by the Chicago Cubs in a two-game set. It has also been reported that Ohtani won’t return to the mound for at least a couple more months. The Dodgers are a team built for October, but the lethargic start, especially offensively, is a reason for slight concern.
