Former Swindon Town midfielder Reconnects With Former Teammate
Jordan Lyden, a former Swindon Town midfielder, has joined Hereford on a free transfer, according to a statement on the club’s website.
Despite winning the League Two title the previous season, the 27-year-old has been a free agent since the summer and makes a surprising drop to the sixth tier.
The Swindon spell
Lyden joined Swindon Town in July 2019 after being released by Premier League club Aston Villa. Lyden made 24 appearances for the club in his rookie season and provided two goals, including a crucial strike against Northampton in a 1-0 win.
However, after a successful debut season, injuries took over, and the midfielder was limited to just 29 appearances over the next two seasons until being released in June 2022.
An exasperating start
Hereford have played nine league games this season, winning only three of them, and now lie in 18th place. Nonetheless, despite a strong start, the club is currently on a poor run of form.
This is because Hereford have lost five of their last six league games, with their lone victory coming against Chester FC in early September.
Swindon Town, Lyden’s old club, have had an amazing start under Michael Flynn, sitting sixth in League Two and scoring 11 goals in their last three games, including a 6-0 win against Crawley.
What was said?
Hereford manager Paul Caddis wrote to the club’s website regarding the signing, stating…
“Jordan is a brilliant midfielder who has already won League 2 twice in his career.” He’s a ball-winning central midfielder who also plays well in possession and makes sound judgments.
“Jordan is a brilliant signing for our football club, and I am a huge admirer of his having played alongside him several years ago.”
Author’s Opinion
Lyden has established himself in League Two but has been plagued by injuries, which may be one of the reasons he has been demoted to the National League North this season.
This transfer, though, is a steal for Hereford, since I’m amazed no National League club has expressed an interest. Lyden will work with Paul Caddis, who will know how to get the most out of the midfielder, potentially reigniting his career.
