Liverpool want to sign £42m star who Newcastle were told they couldn’t get this summer

Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City earlier this summer, and now the midfielder could be on the move.

The 27-year-old was named as one of Eddie Howe’s midfield targets, as he eyed a marquee player to go alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

Newcastle’s initial interest was rebuffed. They were told that Phillips was going to stay at Manchester City and fight for his place following a tough debut year. While he won the treble in his first season after his £42million move from Leeds, he barely played.

That is why Newcastle made a move, but it fell short. Phillips has since stated his desire to remain at the Etihad, but now another chance to leave could be on the horizon.

That is because TalkSPORT claim that Liverpool are considering a move for Phillips.

They state that the Reds considered signing him when he was at Leeds, and that a move to Anfield is one to watch between now and the end of the summer transfer window.

Liverpool are eager to sign a defensive midfielder, and have struggled to land key targets. Jurgen Klopp has seen moves for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia collapse, with both players signing for Chelsea instead.

Now he could turn to Phillips, who may have a fresh opportunity to leave Man City. While he thinks he can turn his City career around, season two has started very much like season one. He has not played a single minute so far, sitting on the bench for the first two Premier League games, the UEFA Super Cup and the Community Shield.

A move to Newcastle was not appealing at the start of the summer, which was understandable. He wanted to fight for his place under Pep Guardiola, and that is commendable. But now the tide could be turning, with Liverpool knocking at the door.

If Phillips does complete a u-turn and decide to leave, do not expect Newcastle to make a move. The Magpies got Sandro Tonali instead, and appear to be closed for business once Lewis Hall arrives.
