The Athletic have stated that Sergio Reguilon is ‘unlikely’ to be at Tottenham Hotspur when the new campaign gets underway.
Reguilon spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Atletico Madrid after having been sidelined by Antonio Conte, who did not see the Spaniard as a good fit for the left wing-back role.
The former Real Madrid man might perhaps be hoping that his fortunes change under Ange Postecoglou, who prefers playing with a back four.
With Ryan Sessegnon picking up a hamstring injury, which has ruled him out of pre-season (and potentially the start of the new campaign), Reguilon was given the nod to start in the friendly against West Ham on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old did show some promising signs going forward, making some smart overlaps but he did struggle defensively at times, with Jarrod Bowen going past him with ease on a couple of occasions.
Reguilon is not expected to pass the Postecoglou test
The Athletic state that the left-back’s performance ‘did not do much to dispel the doubts’ around him, and the player is not likely to be part of Postecoglou’s plans for the upcoming campaign.
Spurs Web Opinion
Even with Sessegnon out injured, there does not appear to be a place for Reguilon in the Spurs squad.
Davies is much better equipped to play as an inverted full-back and I expect the Welshman to compete with Destiny Udogie for the left-back spot.
