Green Bay Packers: Matt LaFleur’s QB Guru Head Coaching Replacement Is Gaining Notoriety
The Green Bay Packers haven’t been as successful over the past two seasons as they were during Matt LaFleur’s first three seasons in charge. LaFleur had three consecutive seasons with thirteen wins and two consecutive trips to the NFC Championship during his first three years as head coach.
The team has cooled off over the last two years, having finished 8-9 in 2022 and 3-5 in 2023. Without a doubt, the team’s talent level has suffered as a result of the apparent roster changes made over the past few seasons (including the trades of Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams and the departures of several veteran free agents). Giving LaFleur a few more years to get this young roster clicking makes sense, given how well the offense performed during his first three years in Green Bay. If the front office were to change, there is one name that would be very appealing.
According to Ryan Heckman of Lombardiave.com, Green Bay stands to gain from this.
The Packers should be familiar with the man who’s arguably the best choice to lead the team next season. After taking over for Dan Campbell as offensive coordinator the previous season, Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions led the team to the fourth-best overall offense in the NFL in terms of yards per game.
Detroit is the eighth-highest scoring team in the league this season and is once again ranked fourth in yards per game. Johnson has helped Jared Goff, who was previously an afterthought, revive his career. The Lions were expected to acquire their franchise quarterback in the future from that Matthew Stafford trade, if only in exchange for one of the first-round picks they received.
Rather, Goff appears to be Detroit’s long-term and present solution. With the exception of the recent Week 7 disaster, of course, he has been playing some of the best football of his career, and the Lions offense appears to be among the league’s most entertaining units.
Love might or might not be the Packers’ franchise quarterback, but Johnson would probably be the one to decide if he’s the right guy in the end. Once Black Monday arrives, Johnson will have a queue of interested teams, so the Packers would need to move quickly.
Jared Goff has benefited from Johnson’s high-level coaching, which is just one of his many accomplishments. Goff finished fifth in 2022 and is ranked ninth in QBR this year. Considering that he finished 23rd in his final season with Sean McVay and the Rams, it’s noteworthy.
Johnson’s dynamic running schemes are greatly enhanced by the play-action pass, which minimizes Goff’s shortcomings while emphasizing his strengths.
If a coach wants their quarterback to elevate to the next level, Johnson ought to be at the top of the list. That’s precisely Jordan Love’s situation.
