Newcastle United have spent more than £100million on new players this summer, and it might not be over.
The Magpies have brought in four players so far ahead of the new season. Yankuba Minteh was the first to arrive, but he was immediately loaned out to Feyenoord and is one for the future. The major additions have been Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento.
Those new additions seriously enhance Eddie Howe’s squad, with the new Toon boss looking for more depth as he looks to impress in the Premier League once again whilst also competing in the Champions League.
Despite the new signings, Howe is keen for the club to do more business. Next on the agenda looks set to be a centre-back – preferably someone who is right-footed.
There do not appear to be many concrete links right now, with Joachim Andersen perhaps the most regular player to be mentioned as a possible target. He could prove to be a smart addition, but Newcastle are yet to make a bid.
This is the owners’ fourth transfer window in charge of Newcastle United, and they have made a real splash in their last three, particularly late on. In January 2022 it was Bruno Guimaraes, in summer 2022 it was Alexander Isak and in January 2023 it was Anthony Gordon.
Now it is summer 2023, and the Chronicle have hinted that another big deal could still be on the way if an opportunity comes Newcastle’s way.
Newcastle owners ready to back Eddie Howe again
The Chronicle have stated that the next thing Howe wants at Newcastle is a new centre-back. However, they have hinted that another deal could happen on top of that.
Lee Ryder wrote for the Chronicle: “Chronicle Live understands that Eddie Howe will have the support of his board in the latter stages of the summer window if an opportunity that will benefit United arises before the deadline.”
While it is fairly cryptic, that sounds quite exciting. They are not saying that they will pursue another deal, but the capacity is there if the right type of opportunity comes Newcastle’s way.
We have seen the owners move fast for big signings in the past, especially late in the window. And despite concerns about FFP, this backing of Howe would suggest that there is money available for the right player.
After a centre-back, you have to imagine that the next priority is a left-back. That is what Alan Shearer wants, while the club were very keen to land Kieran Tierney earlier this summer.
It is all speculation at this point in time, but the Chronicle’s update suggests that the club are capable of pulling a rabbit out of the hat late in the day.
