There has been much speculation about whether West Ham will or won’t hand Jesse Lingard a short-term deal and last week Everton entered the running.

Everton lurking for Lingard after month-long Hammers training camp

The Scot has praised Lingard’s improving fitness levels over the last week amid the claims that Everton want to sign him.

Given Lingard has now been training with the Hammers for close to a month, joining Everton – or any other club at this stage – would be a real kick in the teeth.

Everton entering the equation, in the wake of their takeover by Miami-based 777, has planted a seed of doubt in the minds of some West Ham supporters after he snubbed them for Forest last year.

The Toffees, like West Ham, do have a space in their squad to register a free agent with Premier League permission.

And Sean Dyche desperately needs a player of Lingard’s ilk after Everton lost both Demarai Gray and Alex Iwobi.

Lingard appeared to drop a big hint over his West Ham future with a social media post after the Everton links last week.

But the Toffees were boosted when a West Ham board source cast doubt over a Hammers deal for Lingard by claiming the chances of a permanent contract are ‘diminishing’ unless Moyes plans to use him as a striker.

Now there’s been an insight on the current situation from an unlikely setting.

Because Lingard’s lawyer has made a big West Ham deal claim in a court hearing amid Everton interest as Moyes gives a new update.

Lingard was up in court on drink driving charges this week.

And during the hearing, in which Lingard apologised for ‘putting lives at risk’, his lawyer discussed the player’s future plans.

Frank Rogers, representing Lingard, revealed to the court that West Ham are indeed considering signing his client, as reported by The Daily Mail.

‘We’re happy to get Jesse in the right condition’

Mr Rogers said that his client would pay a ‘heavy price’ in the future as his career and family – to whom he has large financial commitments – would be impacted.

He added that Lingard – who is currently a free agent after being released by Forest – was training with West Ham, who were considering offering him a contract, and other offers were ‘in the pipeline’.

The latter presumably being the interest from Everton.

In his press conference ahead of the trip to Liverpool this weekend, Moyes was once again asked about a deal for Lingard.

“Yea I think Jesse is starting to get himself back,” Moyes said on Sky Sports News (Friday September 22 11.26am).

“He’s had the best part of a month now like pre-season work and is involved in a lot of the football. So he’s doing well but we’ve got no real update to give you from what I’ve said before.

“But we’re happy to try and get Jesse in the right condition.”
