David Moyes was taken aback by what a £7 million West Ham player accomplished against Liverpool yesterday.
West Ham United boss David Moyes was devastated by Michail Antonio’s miss against Liverpool at Anfield yesterday.
Michail Antonio fluffed his lines with a header from Soucek’s cross eight minutes in, as shown on BBC Match of the Day.
The camera then cuts to Moyes, who is on his knees.
“And Antonio should have buried that one, that’s huge,” Guy Mowbray remarked of the chance and Moyes’ reaction.
“Alisson saved one header and [Michail] Antonio put one wide, and his was the better chance.”
“David Moyes is speechless.
“It’s the kind of thing that has to happen if away teams are to win at Anfield.”
“Enough for David Moyes to sink to his knee.”
And, given West Ham’s strong start, it was a great opportunity for Moyes and Antonio to establish themselves.
It wasn’t the biggest miss in a striker’s career, but it was certainly one that irritated Antonio’s management.
Moyes collapsed to the ground when Antonio failed to put West Ham ahead.
Although Moyes was frustrated by Antonio’s miss, he has taken the opportunity following the game to compliment Jarrod Bowen.
Bowen did, in fact, score West Ham’s lone goal on the day, and Moyes believes he is underappreciated.
Liverpool, of course, has been linked with Bowen.
Jurgen Klopp is said to be a fan, so it will be intriguing to see how the Englishman performs at Anfield.
Lucas Paqueta, a player wanted by Manchester City, was also impressive.
Along with £7 million Antonio, West Ham definitely has some quality options under Moyes, and it’s no wonder that they’re looking strong this season.
In the long run, back-to-back losses to Liverpool and Manchester City will be insignificant.
The Hammers will now switch their attention to Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday.
