Newcastle eyeing early move for Aston Villa midfielder in PSR-driven deal?
As we know from last summer’s chaos, clubs facing PSR issues will be forced to sell before June 30th to avoid sanctions.
We were caught out and left scrambling almost 12 months ago, seeing Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson depart during a month that saw Anthony Gordon linked with a shock move to Liverpool.
However, there is a feeling this time around that the shoe will be on the other foot, seeing Newcastle target those in need of a major sale before next month’s PSR cut-off, with Eddie Howe confirming that we’re exploring our options during last Friday’s press conference.
Aston Villa are thought to be one of the clubs flirting with financial trouble and it sounds like Newcastle may look to exploit that next month..
Toon eyeing Villa midfielder?
According to Mark Douglas at The i, Newcastle could make an early move for Jacob Ramsey in a bid to exploit Aston Villa’s need to sell.
The North East reporter reveals that Newcastle hold long-term interest in Ramsey, who was linked with a potential move to St James’ Park last January by The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Newcastle are planning to ‘take advantage’ of clubs forced to sell before next month’s PSR deadline and iNews have been told by football finance experts that both Aston Villa and Chelsea are two at risk.
Ramsey’s ability to play as a left-sided No 8 or as a left-winger will appeal to Eddie Howe, with the 23-year-old representing a potential upgrade on Joe Willock following a tough season for the ex-Arsenal midfielder.
However, even if Villa must sell, Douglas believes a deal would be ‘difficult’ given their reluctance to strengthen a Premier League rival.
Who else could Newcastle look at?
Villa’s Morgan Rogers would be a dream target should our top five rivals need a major sale, but The Mail’s Craig Hope has already suggested that a move for him seems unlikely.
As for Chelsea, we saw Noni Madueke linked last summer as a potential right-winger target, although it remains to be seen if he would fit into Howe’s high-intensity Newcastle side.
One player who is one to watch, however, is Blues defender Josh Acheampong, who Newcastle attempted to sign last summer before the youngster signed a new deal at Stamford Bridge.
The 19-year-old, who can operate at centre-back and as a right-back, is one of the most highly-rated talents in the country and would join former Chelsea prospects Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento on Tyneside should we reignite our interest.
