On Friday night, Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta put a possible period on all of the sentences that have been written about the future of iconic tight end Mark Andrews.
Andrews ended his 2024 season somewhere between a tragic hero and a traitorous villain. A star for so many years, it took a fumble and a drop to erase seven years of success.
Two plays made one of the game’s best tight ends a bit more expendable. Two plays could very well define Andrews’ career.
However, the Buffalo Bills didn’t get much farther than the Ravens team they bested in the Divisional Round. Baltimore’s window didn’t slam shut, and with quarterback Lamar Jackson under center, a Super Bowl remains in play.
On the way, maybe so does Andrews’ path to redemption.
Andrews will only get that chance if the Ravens keep him around for 2025. His $16.9 million cap hit could cause Baltimore to pivot – it’s a movable deal with no guaranteed salary remaining. Standout tight end Isaiah Likely waiting in the wings might push general manager DeCosta to make a move.
And yet, Andrews revealed his level of “trust” in the Ravens, helping fans believe he’ll be back in for another deep playoff run.
“I know the Ravens and my relationship is incredibly strong and I trust in [DeCosta] and everybody there over at the Ravens,” Andrews said, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “And there’s nothing on my end really to share. For me, it’s just been working hard this offseason and trying to get in the best shape of my life, trying to have the best season of my life coming up and winning a Super Bowl.”
And now it seems that trust might be justified.
A few days ago, the GM made no promises.
“I never know what’s going to happen, and I would never want to say this or that, but I can tell you this: Mark Andrews is a warrior, and he’s played his butt off for us, and his competitiveness, his talent, his attitude, his leadership is so valued here,” DeCosta said, via Pro Football Talk. “He’s a great player, and we’re in the business of keeping as many great players as we can, so there’s always a lot of unpredictability with the draft. You just never know.”
But this weekend?
“At this point, I really expect Mark to be on this team,” DeCosta said in an update. “Great player. Love him. Competitive, tough, playmaker. I would expect him to be on the team.”
In play here? As we churn to the end of NFL Draft weekend, there is little momentum to many veteran trades because … well, all the picks are used up.
But that can be a good thing in Baltimore … because a couple of errors notwithstanding, Mark Andrews can still be a very good player in Baltimore.
