After receiving a red card against Atletico Madrid for a challenge that resulted in a knee injury, Celtic forward Daizen Maeda will be sidelined for six weeks.
After a VAR review upgraded Maeda’s yellow card to a red one for a first-half tackle on Mario Hermoso of Atletico, the player was sent off.
“Daizen will probably be up to six weeks out with the injury from the challenge,” stated Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. His medial knee ligament is strained.
“His injury most likely wouldn’t have occurred if he had been stronger during the challenge. The knee ligament has just been exposed by the clash of feet.
“It’s a big shame for us because he has been brilliant for me since I came here.”
“He’s a great reference for the intensity of the team so he’ll be a big miss for us,” Rodgers continued to Sky Sports.
This season, the Japan international has started all but one game and netted two goals.
The 26-year-old will miss Celtic’s next six Scottish Premiership games, beginning with Sunday’s livestreamed home match against Aberdeen.
After Celtic’s 6-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, Maeda sustained an injury that has left them at the bottom of Group E.
The Scottish Premiership champions have yet to win in 14 Champions League games (D3 L11), with their only victory of the season coming against the Spanish team in Glasgow last month.
“I don’t think in any game apart from that part of the game when we were down to 10 men that we’ve ever felt inferior in the game,” Aaron Rodgers stated to Sky Sports.
“What you get in the Champions League, in my opinion, is the best caliber of play. Most teams have very good forward lines, and circumstances that would normally go unnoticed in your home league present an opportunity for the opposition to score. So that’s the primary distinction.
“We’ve been in every game we’ve played in, even against Feyenoord when we were down to nine men. It’s not about being practical.
“It’s just a real challenge when you’re playing against top teams with 10 men, but it’s a learning and you have to move on.”
When asked if the team needs more talent to compete in the Champions League, Rodgers said, “There’s no question in my mind.”
“It’s what I’ve said all along that you need to have quality in your squad, in particular at the very highest level, that’s what wins you games and makes the difference.”The players here deserve a great deal of credit for their performance in the games, but at this level, quality is unavoidably necessary in order to advance.”
