Wolves came into the game on a the back of a series of impressive results, beating Saints in the quarter finals before dismantling Huddersfield in the semi-final three weeks ago.

But despite a battling display, they were beaten 18-8 by a Wigan side who can now call themselves World Club, Super League and Challenge Cup champions.

And Aussie Drinkwater, who inspired Catalans to a win over Wolves in the 2018 final, says it will be a tough few days for the players to get over the loss.

“That was the worst we have played this year. We were quite disconnected with the ball,” he said.

“It was one of those days where everything that could do wrong did go wrong.

“We didn’t build any pressure and they are obviously a good team so it is very disappointing.”

A completion rate of just 60 per cent saw Warrington head into the sheds at half time 12-2 down, after being largely dominated.

And Drinkwater said it had an effect towards the end of the game.

He added: “We didn’t complete well in the first half, did a lot of tackling and that probably juiced us towards the end of the game.

“We didn’t give up but in the first half we tried to push it too early, didn’t build any pressure and they can grind it out. It is a tough one to get over.

“We can use this as motivation going forward. It is going to take us a few days to get over. But it is Salford on Friday night, it is back to Super League so all eyes on that prize now.”
