Ohio State upset second-ranked Purdue 73-69 on Sunday, shocking the college basketball world and setting up a wild ride for interim coach Jake Diebler that will undoubtedly upset the AP Top 25 rankings on Monday. In front of a sellout home crowd, Ohio State responded to the midweek firing of veteran coach Chris Holtmann by winning its best game of the season. Jamison Battle’s jumper in the closing seconds gave Ohio State the lead for good.
As part of the mass fluctuation expected within the AP Poll pertaining to the SEC, especially after 11th-ranked South Carolina went 0-2 during the week, Kentucky’s upset victory over Auburn on the road and the end of the Tigers’ 16-game home winning streak on Saturday threw a wrench in the picture of the SEC title. Here’s how we anticipate Monday’s rankings to appear as we approach the end of February:
After defeating FAU on Sunday, USF has now won eleven straight games and is leading the AAC. Selton Miguel scored a game-high 25 points, and Chris Youngblood, a transfer from Kennesaw State, chipped in 23 more to help the Bulls win, despite almost blowing a 25-point lead. If USF continues this trend, this team could be very dangerous in the NCAA Tournament.
After posting a pair of wins to move to 20-6 overall, San Diego State is on fire, and we expect the Aztecs to move from being unranked to inside the top 20 this week. Dayton bounced back from an unexpected loss to VCU with two conference victories to maintain their ranking in the national rankings.
After starting the season with a 21-3 record and making their AP Poll debut in recent weeks, South Carolina’s incredible season under second-year coach Lamont Paris has encountered a roadblock. The Gamecocks lost to LSU at home by a single point after being humiliated by 40 points at Auburn. Before the middle of February, the No. 5 seed prediction for the NCAA Tournament was no longer in place.
