Giants pitcher Blake Snell has a left adductor strain; he is placed on the 15-day injured list.
SAN FRANCISCO — Due to a left adductor strain, left-hander Blake Snell of the San Francisco Giants was scratched from his planned start against the New York Mets on Wednesday and placed on the 15-day injured list.
It was described as a moderate strain by Giants manager Bob Melvin. There were no immediate details available regarding Snell’s expected return date.
Melvin stated, “(The injury happened) the other day when he was throwing his bullpen.” And he kind of stopped talking after that. The following day, I went outside and threw some more while attempting to slightly lean on it. It’s obviously not good to lose him for, well, we’re not sure how long yet.
After agreeing to a $62 million, two-year deal with the Giants last month, Snell, the current National League Cy Young Award winner with the San Diego Padres, went 0-3 with an 11.57 ERA in his first three starts. In 11 and a third innings, the 31-year-old has given up 15 earned runs and 18 hits while striking out 12 and walking five.
Snell is one of just seven pitchers in Major League Baseball history to have won both the American League and National League Cy Young Awards. Along with the Tampa Bay Rays, he was the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner.
Between the Rays, Padres, and Giants, Snell has made 194 starts and is 71-58 with a 3.30 ERA.
In the series finale against New York on Wednesday, San Francisco announced that right-handed reliever Ryan Walker would start the game. Landen Roupp, a right-hander, was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
The Giants are looking for their first home sweep of the Mets since June 6–8, 2014, after taking the first two games of the series.
Sean Manaea, a left-hander who spent last season with San Francisco, will start for New York on Wednesday.
