Sunderland confirm Elliot Embleton’s surgery following his injury against Derby County.
Sunderland have revealed that Elliot Embleton will have surgery on a thigh injury suffered while on loan at Derby County.
The midfielder left a training session last Friday after suffering an injury while attempting to take a corner. Scan has since verified he has a tear, and the athlete has returned to the north east.
Sunderland have now confirmed that the midfielder will need surgery, putting him at risk of another lengthy layoff after only recently returning from an eight-month absence due to a broken ankle. “Elliot Embleton has returned to the Academy of Light after suffering a thigh injury while on loan at Derby County,” the club reported.
“The 24-year-old recently completed a season-long loan move to Pride Park Stadium, where he is continuing his recovery from an ankle injury sustained in December 2022.” Embleton, who has made two appearances for the Rams, will now be sidelined for an extended period of time, as the midfielder is expected to have surgery before finishing his recovery on Wearside. “Everyone at SAFC wishes Elliot a speedy recovery.”
“I knew it was severe last Friday because I went into the doctor’s room where he was laying down,” Derby head coach Paul Warne said of the injury yesterday. “He was crying. I tapped him on the shoulder and apologized, but he had no recollection of me entering the room since, bless him, he was in such a terrible place.
“He had the scan, and the results were dire. I believe he will require surgical repair. On Tuesday, I saw him in the parking lot because he came in to say goodbye to everyone. He will resume his rehabilitation in Sunderland because he will be out for several months.
“He was just broken, and I think people understand that playing football is a huge honor, but you work so hard and dedicate yourself to it every day.” He was ecstatic to have worked so hard to recover from the other injuries and then go so far down the rehab, get minutes in and then minutes in the first team, and build up to play the way he wanted to play and express himself.
“Having that taken away from him again in a freak injury is heartbreaking for him.” I hugged him in the parking lot and felt sorry for him. Hopefully, our paths will cross again soon.”
