At Magpies HQ, Collingwood coach speaks to AFL executives.
On Monday, while the flag winners hosted the AFL executives, Collingwood premiership coach Craig McRae gave a presentation to the AFL Commission.
McRae addressed the Commissioners on Monday following the team’s 2023 flag victory. The League requires the current premiership coach to address the Commissioners prior to the commencement of the following season each year.
At the Commission meeting on Monday at the Magpies’ AIA Centre, McRae—who led the Pies to their 16th premiership in just his second season as Collingwood coach last year—was on the agenda.
The AFL Commission has asked coaches from the men’s and women’s competitions to give talks about how they achieved success in recent years.
In the off-season before the 2023 season, Geelong coach Chris Scott and Melbourne AFLW coach Mick Stinear gave presentations to the Commission after winning their respective premierships in 2022.
With the season quickly approaching and the AFL proposing several rule changes at the end of the previous year that needed to be approved before the preseason games started, the Commission had a full agenda on Monday.
A higher emphasis on run-down tackles in the rough conduct section of the Match Review and players’ increased duty of care to avoid high contact when trying to smother opponents were among the changes brought about by Brayden Maynard’s contentious Tribunal case during the previous year’s finals series.
