Conor Gallagher has been priced out of a transfer to Tottenham by Chelsea.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham failed to reach an agreement with Chelsea on deadline day to sign midfielder Conor Gallagher after the Blues sought a hefty sum.

According to the publication, Spurs launched a late £40 million proposal for the 23-year-old as Ange Postecoglou sought to reinforce his midfield in the final days of the summer transfer season.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea turned down the bid and requested £48 million plus add-ons for Gallagher’s signature. They were eager to sell at the appropriate price, but Tottenham were out of the running, therefore Gallagher stayed at Stamford Bridge until the window closed at 11 p.m. on Friday.

The England international is pleased to be staying at Chelsea, but he may struggle to earn regular playing time now that Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia have arrived.

Caicedo has already appeared three times for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, while Lavia is likely to be a regular once he regains full fitness. The 19-year-old is likely to be available for selection following the international break in September.

Palmer joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £40 million on Friday and might be in the squad for today’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest.

Deal out

Tottenham were looking for a midfielder before the transfer window closed on Friday, but their deal for Gallagher fell through at the last minute.

Postecoglou was looking for a replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who had been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid on the day of the transfer deadline. The North Londoners rejected a loan proposal from the La Liga club because it did not include an obligation to buy.

Hojbjerg is not in Postecoglou’s plans for the new season and has started only two league games this season. In the Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham on Tuesday, he was picked to the starting lineup for the first time this season.

The former Celtic manager believes Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are better than the Danish midfielder. He will now remain at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the end of the winter transfer window.
