Tottenham’s chances to secure ‘ideal’ free signing in trouble as ‘new proposal’ submitted
Tottenham are keen to bolster their ranks before the start of the season, with signings required in all departments.
Tottenham appear to have passed up on the opportunity to reignite their interest in free agent Daichi Kamada this summer. Spurs were previously keen on the playmaker whilst he was at Eintracht Frankfurt but a change of face in the dugout seems to have reshaped their transfer targets.
Tottenham have been in the market for midfielders this summer and addressed their lack of creativity in the middle of the park by signing James Maddison from Leicester City. However, relying on the England international to stay fit for an entire campaign is a significant ask.
Thus, when it became clear that Kamada would not join AC Milan this summer, there was an expectation that Tottenham would reignite their interest in the Japan international. They were previously keen to secure his services, along with numerous top clubs around Europe, and made enquiries into his availability but the player was keen to join Milan instead.
The faith was not repaid though as they soon opted to sign Samuel Chukwueze instead. Many expected Spurs and other Premier League clubs to try and pounce upon the opportunity to sign the free agent, however, a move to the Serie A is still on the cards for Kamada.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Lazio have submitted a verbal offer for the playmaker and negotiations are ongoing between the player and the club. Kamada is said to also have two other offers on the table and is weighing up his options.
With Ange Postecoglou keen to deploy his tried and tested 4-3-3 at Tottenham, the chance to sign a midfielder that is proven at the top level on a free transfer has largely been regarded as ‘ideal’ by many.
Kamada scored nine and assisted six in 32 Bundesliga appearances last season, impressing in cup competitions as well – scoring four in the DFB Pokal and on three occasions in the Champions League. With no decision made on his future, there is still time for Spurs, or an alternative outfit, to hijack Lazio’s bid and turn Kamada’s head with the prospect of competing in the Premier League.
Postecoglou would need to green-light such a move, but he is keen to acquire the services of at least one defender before the 2023/24 campaign begins and is prioritising a signing in that department currently. The Australian will also need to consider his next move if Harry Kane is granted a move to Bayern Munich this summer, with talks ongoing between the two clubs.
