One player making a compelling case for a roster spot is Gavin Sheets. The 28-year-old has been a revelation in the Cactus League, delivering a breakout performance that could give the Padres a much-needed left-handed power boost.
Gavin Sheets Resurgence Could Strengthen Padres Offense
Sheets is entering his fifth MLB season and his first with the Padres after signing a minor league deal as a non-roster invitee just before Spring Training. The former Chicago White Sox slugger played a key role in their 2021 AL Central-winning squad. Over four seasons with the White Sox, Sheets posted a .230/.295/.357 slash line with a .660 OPS (90 OPS+), along with 46 home runs and 175 RBIs. While not eye-popping numbers, he proved to be a steady, reliable left-handed bat for Chicago.
The Padres took a low-risk, high-reward gamble on Sheets. They added him to the mix of players competing for time at first base, left field, and designated hitter. The competition is crowded, including names like Jason Heyward, Tirso Ornelas, Yuli Gurriel, Eguy Rosario, Oscar González, Connor Joe, Jose Iglesias and Tyler Wade. Regardless, Sheets’ power surge has forced the Padres into a tough decision. It also makes him one of the most intriguing storylines as camp winds down.
Red-Hot Sheets Provides Left-Handed Power
Sheets has been one of the hottest hitters in Cactus League play, slashing .310/.341/.786 with an impressive 1.127 OPS, six home runs, and 12 RBIs across 17 spring games. His bat has especially caught fire in the past week, as he’s launched all of his spring home runs during that span. The adjustments he’s made this offseason have started to pay off in a big way. San Diego’s lineup leans heavily right-handed. With Jurickson Profar’s departure, the team could use another left-handed slugger.
Sheets’ positional versatility also adds value—he can play outfield, infield, or DH against right-handed pitching. Even if he doesn’t claim a starting role, Sheets could be an impact bat off the bench. Given his production this spring, he looks like one of the best under-the-radar offseason signings.
A Trade on the Horizon?
Sheets’ breakout could also have ripple effects on the Padres’ roster decisions. If he makes the team, it could push Jake Cronenworth further into trade discussions. San Diego has reportedly explored trading Cronenworth over the past two seasons, but his contract and declining production have made a deal challenging. However, A.J. Preller is no stranger to pulling off bold moves. Sheets’ emergence could give him added flexibility in reshaping the roster. Additionally, Luis Arráez has been mentioned in trade rumors due to budget constraints, and Ornelas’ ability to play first base could further incentivize Preller to explore a last-minute deal.
