Marvin Jones Jr., a wide receiver with the Detroit Lions, has announced his retirement from football to focus on family problems.
Jones was released by the Lions in a procedural action shortly after his announcement.
Jones made the announcement on Instagram, where he posted a statement.
‘I simply want to express my gratitude and admiration for the Ford family, the city of Detroit, my teammates, and coaches,’ the statement started. ‘In a nutshell, I’m leaving the team to attend to personal family problems.’
‘Although it was not an easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that this team requires while also caring for my family from afar. This organization has always been wonderful in expressing love and support to myself and my family, and this time is no exception.
‘I am grateful for that. I will be rooting for my brothers and coaches every step of the way! It’s the year! Get it now!!! ‘I love and respect everyone!’
Jones re-signed with the Lions in free agency this year after playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars the previous two seasons, catching 119 catches for 1,361 yards and seven scores.
Jones spent four years in Detroit before to his two years in Jacksonville, following four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Jones caught only five catches for 35 yards in the six games he played in Detroit this season.
After his sentence for violating the NFL’s gambling rules was reduced, Detroit recently began pushing second-year wideout Jameson Williams back into the fold, and it can be assumed that Williams will benefit from a few more snaps in Jones’ absence.
