West Ham United in talks with Ajax over Edson Alvreza, price tag revealed to sign him

West Ham are locked in negotiations with Ajax over the potential signing of midfielder Edson Alvarez, according to Jacob Steinburg.

The Guardian journalist tweeted on 6 August that it is likely going to take a bid of between £35million and £45million to get a deal over the line for the Mexican international.

The Mail on Sunday reported on page 99 of its print edition on 6 August that the 25-year-old’s agents have agreed a five-year contract worth £148,000-a-week to take him to the London Stadium.

There seems to be a bit of a gap in valuations between the two clubs for the player after the Daily Mail reported on 5 August that a bid worth £25million had been submitted by West Ham.

That is far less than the Dutch side are believed to be looking for and clearly isn’t going to be accepted given Alvarez’s importance to the side.

He has been an instrumental figure for Ajax since signing from Mexican club America in 2019 after making 147 appearances, where he has scored 13 goals and laid on six assists [Transfermarkt].

But it is a deal that’s worth pursuing because he is the exactly kind of player the Hammers are looking to bring in this summer, as they look for someone to fill the role playing in front of the defence.

There could be some way to go before the clubs reach an agreement on this one, but we don’t have time on our hands so something will have to give in the next few days before the season gets underway.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are in pole position to sign a “monster” from a CL club.
