Former Celtic forward Frank McGarvey dies at the age of 66 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, with the Hoops, Liverpool, and St Mirren all paying respect to the ex-Scotland great.
Frank McGarvey, a Celtic icon, died at the age of 66 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last October.
McGarvey, who was born in Glasgow, joined St Mirren in 1975 and lasted for four years before moving to Liverpool for £270,000.
He left Merseyside the following year, without making a first-team appearance, to join boyhood favorites Celtic, where he won two league titles, two Scottish Cups, and a League Cup.
His final game for Celtic was the 1985 Scottish Cup final against Dundee United, which Celtic won 2-1 at Hampden Park.
After returning to St Mirren for a second stint, he won the Scottish Cup again in 1987 before concluding his professional career with Queen of the South, where he was player-manager, and finally Clyde.
McGarvey made his debut for Scotland as a late substitute in a Home International Championship match against Northern Ireland at Hampden Park in May 1979.
‘Everyone at Celtic is incredibly grieved to hear of the passing of former striker, Frank McGarvey, who died away earlier this morning at the age of 66,’ Celtic said in a statement.
Everyone at Celtic is thinking about and praying for Frank’s family during this difficult time.
YNWA, RIP Frank.’
‘St Mirren Football Club is profoundly saddened to hear of the demise of Frank McGarvey at the age of 66,’ the club wrote.
‘Frank will be remembered fondly at St Mirren, and our hearts go out to Frank’s loved ones at this difficult time.’
Liverpool, with whom McGarvey barely spent 10 months, issued the following statement: ‘Rest in peace, Frank McGarvey.
‘Everyone at the club is thinking of Frank’s family and friends during this terrible time.’
Sean and Scott, his kids, verified his diagnosis in October by posting nearly identical posts on social media.
‘Unfortunately, our Dad was diagnosed with cancer yesterday, and we are awaiting more information from the professionals.
‘We’ll post an update here whenever we have additional information. Thank you for your encouragement and well wishes. Sean, Paul, Scott, and Jennifer.’
