“They will receive whatever assistance they require”: DL Bergin Kysar’s path to signing with OU
At Edmond Santa Fe High School, Bergin Kysar sat at the podium in front of his family, teammates, and coaches in the cafeteria.
In front of an enthusiastic audience, Kysar thanked God, his family, his high school coaches, and the Oklahoma coaching staff before handing over the microphone, picking up a pen, and signing his name on the line.
Playing for the Sooners had always been a dream “in the back of his mind,” but Kysar had no idea that four years ago he would be realizing that dream. or that the position he signed for would be completely different from the one he played for. However, the 230-pound, 6-foot-4 player is on his way to Norman as a preferred walk-on at defensive end.
Kysar signed an early signing period football scholarship to Oklahoma on Wednesday at Edmond Santa Fe High School. He is going to be the preferred walk-on at defensive end.
“I feel fantastic, and I’m eager to get to work,” Kysar exclaimed upon signing. “I just thought that going to prove myself is a great fit for me.”
Despite receiving Power 5 offers from other universities, including Oklahoma State, Kysar chose to walk on to the Sooners. Kysar played quarterback as a child and continued to play the position throughout high school. In his rookie year of 2020, he was a backup quarterback for the state runner-up Edmond Santa Fe team.
He then turned into a force by moving to the defensive line. He was named the Defensive Lineman of the Year for the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference this season after guiding Edmond Santa Fe to a 7-4 record and a trip to the Class 6A-I state quarterfinals.
With 61 tackles (38 solo), 11 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 16 pressures, 8 pass break-ups, 2 interceptions, and 2 defensive touchdowns at the end of the season, Kysar had a stellar season. He also had nine offensive catches for 200 yards and a touchdown.
About OU, Kysar remarked, “They’re going to get whatever they need.” “I’m going to be incredibly adaptable and receptive to everything. All I can do is put in as much effort as I can. They’ll put me where they need me.
The Sooners are headed to the SEC from the Big 12. The Sooners have focused heavily on strengthening their line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball as they’ve got ready for the shift. According to 247Sports, every signee in the 2024 class is rated four stars or higher. Kysar, a highly adaptable walk-on, will benefit the team.
Playing in the SEC will be exciting because of the strong competition, according to Kysar. “Compared to the Big 12, it will be a little different, but I’m going to jump right in.”
Kysar stated that he intends to study engineering at OU. He’ll join that workforce if his NFL route doesn’t work out.
Kysar is not going to enroll at OU early, unlike a few other in-state recruits. He mentioned that he still needs to finish Edmond Santa Fe.
Kysar remarked, “I just want to be the best version of myself.” “I’m going to wrap up the spring season here in Santa Fe, and with any luck, I’ll take home several state titles in track and powerlifting.
