Raiders Need to Win the Remainders of Free Agency

This is an important offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders in their history. Even with a successful draft haul, the Raiders still need to look for gems in free agency as the NFL draft draws near.

After agreeing to terms with defensive lineman Christian Wilkins, the Las Vegas Raiders began free agency with one of the league’s most notable additions. They retained center Andre James and running back Ameer Abdullah, two free agents, in more understated moves that should still help the team this coming season.

Alexander Mattison, a seasoned running back, was also added. As far as free agency goes, the Raiders have spent sensibly and done the best they could. Almost every free agent that Las Vegas signed this offseason was a great value, according to general manager Tom Telesco.

The anticipation over Las Vegas’ selection in the NFL Draft has only grown as the Raiders and the league draw nearer to the big event. On draft day, there are rumors that the Raiders will consider a number of options. There is always conjecture about what the Raiders will do because they have a lot of options and currently sit with the No. 13 pick.

It has been speculated for much of this offseason that they might trade up in the draft to get Jayden Daniels. They may choose to hold onto their selection and select a quarterback, offensive lineman, or cornerback. There are good reasons to believe that the Raiders should draft all three of those spots, and since they have a selection that falls just outside of the top 10, they almost certainly have talent that they can use without having to trade up.

The Raiders’ draft-day selection will be slightly easier as a result of their earlier offseason moves, as they now have fewer positions that truly need to be filled with players capable of starting. They can make use of their draft.

The Raiders and the decisions they will make on draft day are the subject of a lot of talk. But even with a strong draft haul, the Raiders still have more holes in their lineup, particularly on the offensive line, than they can quickly fill. The Raiders should keep an eye out for veteran players who they could still sign in free agency to round out what they anticipate to be a strong draft class, given the excitement surrounding their plans.

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 25–27, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. With the 13th overall pick right now, it belongs to the Las Vegas Raiders.
