With the offseason in full swing, and UF’s roster set for fall camp, it’s time to project Florida’s depth chart as best as possible, which has mainly been determined through chats with sources and observing the Orange and Blue game, considering the media was limited to approximately 15 minutes of observation throughout spring practice.
Here’s a projection of the defense:
Overview: Shemar James’ absence was noticeable during the final month of last season, and his return to full health will go a long way in ensuring the defense is a capable, well-oiled unit this season. With Scooby Williams, the starter at linebacker alongside James last season, now at Texas A&M, the Gators needed to fill a void in the room,
and they did just that by finally securing a commitment from Grayson “Pup” Howard, who flashed at times during his freshman season at South Carolina. The duo are poised to start this season, while veteran Derek Wingo will continue to push for repetitions, too. Florida also brought in two highly touted freshmen at the position, Aaron Chiles and Myles Graham. It’s uncertain which of the two freshmen will play the larger role, however; Chiles only just arrived on campus in late May, while Graham missed the majority of the spring due to a back ailment that required a minor surgical procedure to correct. Either way, the Gators should feel better about the depth at linebacker this season.
