Max Johnston is a target for Portuguese big guns SC Braga, who are in the race for Champions League qualification.

Johnston, who is the son of former Scotland cap Allan, made his debut for Steve Clarke’s national side in the Nations League defeat to Greece last month – after a stellar season in Austria with Sturm Graz.|

The Portuguese side are said to have been scouting Johnston for an extended period, and could now make their move when the summer window opens. The 21-year-old, who has a deal until 2027, is now in his second season in Austria and has made massive strides with the champions.

Braga are currently fourth in the Liga Portugal but have a game in hand over Porto, with Benfica and Sporting ahead of them. Johnston’s statistics and form has also seen a number of Bundesliga sides keep a close eye, where Augsburg have been long-term admirers.

It would take a big million pound bid for Sturm Graz to sell, but they have shown in the past that they will do business if the price is right. It continues his rapid rise since he left Motherwell for Graz back in 2023.

It’s been quite a rise for a man who was on loan at Cove Rangers and Queen of the South just three years ago. Reflecting on his journey he told BBC Sport: “Football changes very quickly. I do think it’s amazing that I was at Cove two years ago and then coming back to Motherwell, which was a great time in my career as well.

“I’m obviously delighted with how everything’s turned out. Hopefully, I can keep going the right way. You just need to keep a level head.”
