But in his message to fans after receiving the award, he said his thank yous before focusing on the work still to do.

“I just wanted to thank all of you supporters for voting me the player of the season,” he said. “I want to thank all the coaching staff, all the players and especially the goalkeeping group for working so closely with me and making me a better goalkeeper.

“We’ve got another massive game against Sheffield United so I can’t wait to see you there.”

Stoke City goalkeeper Viktor Johansson said his ‘head and heart’ are with the Potters after being asked where his future lies.

Johansson, 26, has been a key player for the Potters and has helped them survive in the Championship. He has made 49 appearances in all competitions, 46 of which have come in the league, and he has kept 15 clean sheets.

When asked whether he would still be with the Staffordshire outfit in the next campaign, he said, as per a report by BBC Sport: “I signed for Stoke, so this is where my head and heart are at the moment.”

Regarding their safety, he said: “It’s been a disappointing season because our goal was completely different. It’s not a celebration; it’s more of a massive relief. We had different plans for this season and how it was going to go, but then it changed.

“But to be fair to the boys and the fans, we stuck with it and made sure we stayed up, and then next season we can go again. We can’t wait to go again.”
