John Schneider, the general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, gave his first press conference after the team fired Pete Carroll as vice president of football operations and head coach.
Schneider affirmed that he is in complete control of the staff, including managing the new coaching staff (as opposed to the joint authority he held with Carroll). Schneider voiced his disappointment at the team’s lack of postseason success during the press conference.
Schneider chose not to go into further detail about why he thought Seattle performed below expectations, but it’s not hard to figure out why.
The Seahawks have thrown a wide net when looking for a coach. Eight candidates, including former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn of the Seahawks and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions, are reportedly scheduled for interviews with Seattle this week. Put another way, the saying “we’re in on everything” that was so prevalent during the Carroll/Schneider era also holds true when it comes to selecting a new head coach.
Schneider expressed confidence in the Seahawks’ current roster, which is understandable given that he sees it as a key selling point for a potential head coach.
Finally, Schneider provided a succinct response when asked about his thoughts on Geno Smith’s 2023 season. It is up to you to decide if Schneider is giving away too much about his intentions this offseason at the quarterback position.
